Back To Blogging... and Slogging!!

I'm baaack!! With a little push from my friend bitdepth (check out his blog it's very cool!). Seems like forever since I have posted anything and turns out it has - no real excuse, I haven't run out of things to say or thoughts that make me go hmmm..., just never seemed to get around to it. Plus there were those whole Twitter and Facebook distractions - but I'm back - really, I am!...

So tonight thought I'd post about something I've been up to - as I sit here dripping on to the keyboard - I'm just in from what I affectionately call (well, not so affectionately when I'm actually doing it...) slogging - think of it as periods of walking interrupted by periods of very slow jogging (slow + jog = slog- elementary!! :-)). The good news is that I slog now more than I walk and I'm out about 45-60 minutes a slog - my city is a good one for slogging - pretty, with lots of hills and flat bits (I'm really good at finding the flat bits and downhills). I feel great and I know I'm fitter, so I'll keep it up until the snow flies and then I'll head to the gym for the winter...

--------

A new feature here is that I plan on ending with a link or site that I find useful or interesting or one that just makes me go Hmmm.... Today's site is Ron Berks's - Ron is Professor Emeritus of Biostatistics and Measurement at The John Hopkins University and a master of the use of humour in the classroom and of all things PowerPoint - check him out at LinkedIn too. Ron is amazing and very generous with amazing stuff (stuff is a technical term) and lots of wisdom for educators and presenters. Hmmm...

Maybe NOW You Will Pay Attention to the Pre-Flight Safety Demonstration...

OK admit it - you get settled into your seat on board yet another flight and bury your head into the newspaper, magazine, or book you brought on board with you while you completely ignore the flight attendants who are waving their arms about like hyper traffic cops doing the pre-flight safety demonstration.

Well that may be about to change. The folks at Air New Zealand have taken a whole new approach to the pre-flight demo - with smiles and body paint:

Too funny, but gets the point across - pay attention to the pre-flight demo - I know I will next time I fly, just in case...

And here is the blooper reel which might even be funnier:

Enjoy! Hmmm...

Who Needs 140 Characters? Less IS More

Some people I know feel restricted by Twitter's 140 character limit, others not so much - I'm in the former category, but I am getting better at being brief. In that spirit of new found brevity - I give give you Flutter!

Too funny - enjoy!

NISOD 2008 - Humor And Multimedia as Teaching Tools For The Net Generation...

This session was presented by Dr. Ronald Berk, professor Emeritus at John Hopkins University. A statistician by trade, Ron has published several books on using humour to teach, including "Professors Are From Mars, Students Are From Snickers".

In this informative, entertaining, funny, and transformative presentation, Dr. Berk presented an approach to using humour and multimedia to reach our current millennial students. he began by talking about the parts of the act of teaching;
  • Content (the what)
  • Pedagogy (the how)
Further breaking pedagogy down:
  • Learner-Centered Teaching (over 1000+ articles 119 studies)
  • Technology - online, offline, inline, and outtaline
We looked at the characteristics of the Net Gen digital native learners, the fact that they are visually oriented, that there is a need to address multiple intelligences and learning styles, and that the use of humour can go along way to reaching students. Include humour in your tests, take a "commercial break" when things are lagging and eyes are glazing over, use humour, demonstrations and even role plays to introduce complex or confusing topics, and connect with your learners.

His entire presentation was full of sound clips, vidoes and other cultural references that the audience and his students would get - an amazing use of technology and tools to use humour to break down barriers, present difficult topics and most importantly reach millennial learners with language and symbols that the understand.

One of his key pieces of advice (and there were many) was this - if you want to identify what is in your students' world - ASK them, conduct a survey - great, simple advice. as he put it "We are working together in the room".

Perhaps his best quote of the presentation, and one that encapsulates something that I have believed for a long time is this:

"PowerPoint by itself is a bunch of dead words on a screen"

Add sound, video, interactivity - bring life to your PowerPoint - great stuff.

there is no doubt that this approach to teaching, which I believe works is time consuming - the depth and richness of Dr. Berk's presentation must have taken hours to prepare. I think that the end result was well worth it though - a jam-packed room full of engaged learners.

This was an amazing presentation, perhaps the highlight of NISOD 2008 for me so far - best way that I can sum it up is to say that I wish I had been one of Ron Berk's students and I am so glad that for a very short two hours I was...

The Man Song...

For all those amongst you who know (or at least think they know) that they are lord and master of their domains, the truth is finally revealed - here is a hilarious video from the Milton Show that reveals the truth about all real men:

This was passed on to me by one of my female learners. Could it possible that the secret about men is out? Hmmm...

The Smiley Turns 25

Happy Birthday Smiley :-)!! The smiley :-) turns 25 today. Here is an article telling the tale of the smiley's creation and first use by Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman. An excerpt from the article explains the origins of :-) :

"Fahlman posted the emoticon in a message to an online electronic bulletin board at 11:44 a.m. on Sept. 19, 1982, during a discussion about the limits of online humor and how to denote comments meant to be taken lightly.

"I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-)," wrote Fahlman. "Read it sideways.""

Emoticons have given us a simple way to convey emotions in typed conversations, adding depth and context to many conversations over the past 25 years - Happy Birthday smiley :-), may you have many more...

Life After Death By PowerPoint

There has been a lot written in the blogosphere and elsewhere about PowerPoint - useful tool, horrible crutch, destroyer of education as we know it - you choose.

We have all sat through those presentations that we "affectionately" call "Death By PowerPoint" - slide 22, slide 23..., slide 45, slide 46 - make it STOP!!

This is a hilarious video from Don McMillan - it is a look at what NOT to do with PowerPoint. Follow his lead and you should be able to get your point across in your presentation without any serious casualties or fatalities...

Spring Has Sprung!

The Sun is out! The Sun is out! What a beautiful day here on the East Coast - 18 C and not a cloud in the sky. I spent a lot of time outdoors today without a jacket - sooo nice. Only problem is that now I will need to find my murse (man + purse = murse) so I can stick into it all the bits and pieces, the flotsam and jetsam of life (sunglasses, cell phone, iPod, headphones, PDA, keys...) that I've been stuffing into parka pockets the last few, long, dreary, endless months.

I also think that I have discovered a fascinating new law of nature. Here is my hypothesis - as the weather warms and the sun shines more, several interesting phenomena seem to occur with women's clothing - it becomes more form fitting, brighter in colour, hemlines rise, and necklines plunge. While I have no direct conclusive evidence yet, I believe that there is a direct correlation between these phenomena and the rise in the UV index, but I think that it's going to take several warm, sunny months of in depth research and analysis to prove.

I wonder if the NSERC has any grant money for this sort of thing - you know to cover the cost of scientific instruments and materials - sun screen, sunglasses, beer (for the analysis portion of the project), bug spray (don't get me started on the bugs), and miscellaneous expenses and tips for waitresses at sidewalk cafes across the city (my preferred research sites). Hmmm...

Blame It On Friday The 13th

Ever have one of those days? You know the ones I mean - you wake up (late), get dressed, wear your breakfast, get changed, rush out to the bus (you are even later now) into a snow/rain storm (forgot the umbrella but will miss the bus if you go back for it), get wet, get to work and then the day gets worse? Computer glitches, coffee pot goes on the fritz (OMG - what do you mean there's NO caffeine?), and you get swamped by work and none of it goes well? You misunderstand everything people are saying to you, and that meeting you were supposed to be at started 30 minutes ago without you? Then you wear your food at lunch - (white shirt + tomato sauce = law of physics), and the afternoon goes just as poorly as the morning? You know - it's one of those "I should have stayed in bed days".

Well I had one of those days yesterday, but guess what? It wasn't my fault - it was Friday the 13th's fault. The PsyBlog has an intersting post "Is Friday the Thirteenth Unlucky?". In it the many origins of Friday the 13th are mentioned as are several research studies both supporting and debunking the notion that Friday the 13ths are unlucky. No definitive conclusion is stated, but after the day I had yesterday, I can tell you first hand that Friday the 13th is unlucky. I mean none of yesterday's disasters could actually be my fault. Could they? Hmmm...

Third Life

This is a great ad from the Netherlands (a country well represented in Second Life) for Kit Kat bars. It answers the question - "What does your avatar do for fun when you aren't around?"

If a Blog Falls...

Todays cartoon at bLaugh raises a good point. If no one reads your blog, does it matter? Is it even a blog or just unheard and unseen ramblings? Hmmm...
